SAN BRUNO: To support his staff in a moment of panic, Google CEO Sundar Pichai on Tuesday said that the unexpected shooting at YouTube headquarters that left several injured was a “horrific act of violence,” adding that the situation has been contained.
“There are no words to describe the tragedy that occurred today,” wrote Pichai on Twitter, adding that he and YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki are focused on supporting their employees.
As per details, more than 1,700 people work at YouTube’s San Bruno offices, according to Pichai the company’s security team and police evacuated employees from the buildings.
YouTube is a subsidiary of Mountain View’s Google, but operates with some independence.
The horrific incident of shooting at YouTube headquarters was widely condemned by the leaders from tech companies, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, expressing concerns and support for YouTube on social media.
“Thinking of everyone at YouTube and Google at this awful moment,” Sandberg wrote on her Facebook page.
“Horrible and truly tragic day for YouTube and Google, wishing all the very best for the injured and all those affected.” Bezos tweeted.
As employees waited outside the building, some said they received emails from YouTube managers telling them to “stay safe” but they weren’t given any more information beyond what they gleaned from news reports.
In his note, Google CEO Sundar Pichai assured employees that the situation was now under control, and thanked first responders to the incident, as well as for the outpouring of support.
"I know a lot of you are in shock right now," he wrote. "Over the coming days, we will continue to provide support to help everyone in our Google family heal from this unimaginable tragedy."
